Big Deal on Madonna Street -

Mario Monicelli's classic crime comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street (I Soliti Ignoti) features Vittorio Gassman and Marcello Mastroianni as a pair of thieves who head a group of criminals in a break-in attempt. Their plan involves digging an underground tunnel from an apartment that leads to a neighboring business and drilling their way inside. In addition to each of the burglars struggling with individual personal problems, the group must reassess their plans after they find themselves not in the store, but a different room of the apartment from which they started. Big Deal on Madonna Street is a spoof of Jules Dassin's caper classic Rififi. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

The film was made with the full cooperation of co-owner and host Monty Hall and ABC television, and it serves as an excellent introduction to the economics of U.S. daytime television programming. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Frontline: Obama's Deal -

Gain a deeper understanding of how the Obama administration functions as Frontline producer Michael Kirk pulls back the curtain to reveal how the early decisions made by the 44th President of the United States could ultimately define his entire legacy. From Obama's early efforts to overhaul the health care system to his acrid debates with the Tea Party, the administration faced an imposing uphill battle from day one. In a time when special interest groups have more influence than ever on American politics, Kirk takes viewers behind boardroom doors and into the halls of congress to offer an illuminating look at the state of American politics in the early 21st Century. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Honey Babe Let the Deal Go Down: The Best of...

Full title: Honey Babe Let the Deal Go Down: The Best of the Mississippi Sheiks. In the first half of the 1930s, the trio known by a variety of names, but mostly as the Mississippi Sheiks, recorded a generous number of tracks, about a quarter of which are included here. Prime practitioners of the "string band" style that featured fiddle and banjo alongside guitar, and mixed folk, blues, country, and pop in equal amounts, the Sheiks were capable of everything from uproarious, down-and-dirty tunes ("Please Don't Wake It Up") to harsh, penetrating narratives ("I've Got Blood in My Eyes for You," one of two Sheiks cuts covered by Bob Dylan on his WORLD GONE WRONG album). With sharp instrumental prowess and an ability to jump into any style with verve, they were the veritable toast of the town in their day. The full breadth of their repertoire can be experienced on this disc, which has notably few overlapping tunes with the other single-disc SHEIKS compilation, 1992's STOP AND LISTEN.

I Deal in Danger -

Robert Goulet plays David March, an American traitor living in Germany during World War II. Allowed to travel freely within the Nazi hierarchy, March is privy to secrets that would spell his doom were he on "our" side. What the Nazis don't know (but we do) is that March is on our side: he's a secret agent, posing as a turncoat in order to relay Nazi war plans to the allies. His main goal is to destroy a secret weapons factory, but he still has time to romance German scientist Jo Ann Pflug and French chanteuse Christine Carrere. I Deal in Danger was comprised of three half-hour episode of the 1966 TV series Blue Light; the seamwork shows at times, but the film runs a lot more smoothly than most such pastiches. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Maximum Overdrive/Raw Deal -

Includes:Raw Deal (1986), MPAA Rating: R Maximum Overdrive (1986), MPAA Rating: R Raw Deal A former FBI agent is recruited to root out the gangsters who killed a fellow agent's son in this Arnold Schwarzenegger action film. After being booted out of the bureau for excessive violence, Kaminski (Schwarzenegger) lives in small-town exile with his bitter wife, Amy (Blanche Baker). He gets the chance to return to the big city, however, when Chicago mobsters murder the son of his old colleague Shannon (Darren McGavin), as well as scads of prosecution witnesses against them in an impending court case. Shannon promises to reinstate Kaminski if he'll help engineer the downfall of gang leader Max (Robert Davi). Working undercover and without government sanction, Kaminski infiltrates the mob by posing as a bodyguard/assassin. Along the way, he tussles with beautiful gambling addict Monique (Kathryn Harrold), who starts off as an enemy but ends up more. The action comes to a head when Kaminski's mob bosses send him to kill none other than Shannon. Released post-Terminator and pre-Predator, Raw Deal is one of several non-science fictional action flicks that cemented Schwarzenegger's '80s box-office appeal. Director John Irvin would return the following year with the gritty Vietnam drama Hamburger Hill. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi Maximum Overdrive Writer-director Stephen King falls short in his debut at the helm with Maximum Overdrive, an absurd tale about a radiation storm that somehow animates machines across the world, causing them to turn on their makers. The film focuses on a group of survivors held captive at the Dixie Boy Diner by a group of bad-tempered semis. Led by Emilio Estevez, the diner-goers do their impression of Ten Little Indians, waiting their turn until each gets bumped off one by one. There are holes in the plot big enough for the semis to drive through; for example, why don't the trucks run over the diner at the start of the film rather than wait for 90 minutes? ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

The New Deal

The New Deal: Dan Kurtz (vocals, bass); Jamie Shields (keyboards, Theremin, Vocoder, glass); Darren Shearer (drums).Additional personnel: Antonia Whyatt, Genevieve Makinson (vocals); Cathy Craig (trumpet).Engineers include: Dan Kurtz, Jamie Shields, L. Stu Young.Recorded live in Atlanta, Georgia, Ithaca, New York, Northampton, Massachussetts, and Montreal. For their label debut, the New Deal, a Canadian trio comprised of keyboardist Jamie Shields, bassist Dan Kurtz, and drummer Darren Shearer, polished up and re-recorded many of the songs featured on the their previously released EPs and albums. The release has the feel of the band's arrival in front of a larger audience. As such, they do not take as many improvisational chances as they do on their earlier (live) EPs. The bulk of the album was recorded at performances in Atlanta, Ithaca, Northampton, and Quebec, though it was sculpted into a larger piece in the studio. Occasionally, crowds burst through the pristine mix, only to be twisted and turned into rhythmic samples. A defining element of the band's "live progressive breakbeat house" sound, Shearer's kick drum, is far undermixed, leaving many of the grooves lacking the band's trademark severe dance beat. What is left in these places is something resembling a more electronica-inclined organ trio in the recent tradition of Medeski, Martin, and Wood or Soulive. When the mix is right (as it is on several cuts including "Back to the Middle"), the band has an originally layered sound that cannot be rivaled. The mix has depth, which makes the disc equally good for heady headphone listening as it does for dancing. ~ Jesse Jarnow
